U-Turn
The U-Turn, introduced in Season 12, is similar in format to the Yield; however, it is always placed immediately after a Detour. When there was going to be a U-Turn, the teams would find the message "Caution, U-Turn Ahead" in their clue. The penalty differs from the Yield in that the affected team loses no specific amount of time, but instead they must complete the Detour task which they did not just previously complete (hence, they must complete two detours meaning both). In implementation, it is quite similar to the Yield, having a large sign where the team choosing to apply the penalty places a large picture of the affected team, above a smaller picture of themselves; as well, no team may use the U-Turn more than once in the full Race. In its debut season, it was indicated there would be a total of two U-Turns through the entire race. It is possible for a team to use their U-Turn power against a team that has already passed the U-Turn marker, effectively wasting it, as no team pictures are removed from the U-Turn marker, preventing a team to determine their placement in the leg. Similar to the Yield, teams that lose their "Courtesy Of" picture during the course of the Race lose their power to use the U-Turn. Unlike the Yield, there are no priority numbers to take out should two or more teams want to U-Turn a team. This caused somewhat of a confusion in Season 12, when Kynt & Vyxsin, currently in 4th place, tried to U-Turn Nicolas & Donald, a team that was ahead of them, instead of the only team behind them, Nathan & Jennifer.This mistake was repeated in Season 19 where Lawrence & Zac used their U-Turn power on Amani & Marcus who were ahead of them at the time.
In Season 14 a twist was added to the U-Turn. This twist allowed teams to U-Turn other teams without letting the other teams know which team used the U-Turn. Coined the "Blind U-Turn", it served its purpose in season 14 as Amanda & Kris mistakenly identified two teams as possible U-Turn users. The second Blind U-Turn appeared in season 16 when the U-turn was re-introduced however it failed to serve it's purpose as being Blind because the U-Turn-ee team, Joe & Heidi, correctly identified Louie & Michael as their U-Turners. There was said to be two U-Turns offered on Season 15 in Legs 3 and 8.The U-Turn on leg 3 was a Blind U-Turn where Lance & Keri used their U-Turn power on Sam & Dan who were ahead of them therefore it had no effect and the second U-Turn on leg 8 wasn't used at all so both U-Turns were unaired in the final production.
In Season 17, another twist was added to the U-Turn. This is called a "Double U-Turn" which allows two teams to use their U-Turn power on the same leg. The first Double U-Turn was introduced on Leg 9. Both U-Turns prooved effective where Jill & Thomas and Nat & Kat both used their U-Turn powers on Brook & Claire and Chad & Stephanie respectively. The next Double U-Turn appeared in Season 18 where Kynt & Vyxsin U-Turned Jamie & Cara who then used their U-Turn power on Flight Time & Big Easy making them the first team to use and recieve the same Double U-Turn.

Did you know that the users of th Blind U-Turn could use the normal U-Turn after? Luke reveiled it in a post-race interview and he said he kept that secret because Margie and him wanted to U-Turn Kisha and Jen, but they were already U-Turne. The reason is because they still had their 'Courtesy Of' sticker.

Andrew & Dan said there was an un-aired U-Turn in leg 9, just thought that was interesting considering no one seemed to know when it was. |
